EastEnders fans are in for a poignant episode as the show delves into Phil Mitchell's journey towards healing after his heart-wrenching suicide attempt. In an acclaimed storyline during February's 40th anniversary specials, Walford stalwart Phil (portrayed by Steve McFadden) reached a tipping point and was subsequently admitted to a mental health unit. The upcoming special centres on Phil as he strikes up a friendship with fellow patient Gaz, portrayed by the exceptional Keith Allen, who has a pivotal role in encouraging Phil to face his inner turmoil. Spanning four weeks, the episode will follow Phil as he starts confronting his depression and symptoms of psychosis through therapy and group interventions, Gaz at his side providing support. Veteran actor Allen, whose career kicked off in 1981 in Wolcott, is no stranger to the camera with an extensive resume featuring in standout projects like Trainspotting (1996), The Others (2001), and more recent works such as The Buckingham Murders (2023), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), and the popular series Robin Hood (2006 - 2009). Reflecting on his EastEnders cameo, Keith remarked, "I've written a number one hit single, I've presented Top of the Pops, I've played the lead in the West End and I was at Craven Cottage when we beat Juventus 4-1...Could it get better than that?" Keith revealed: "Well, yes, I've just guested in an episode of EastEnders... What a joy! And what an honour to be a part of Steve McFadden's incredibly moving storyline. EastEnders has collaborated with charitable organizations such as The Samaritans, Rethink Mental Illness, the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and Mind to guarantee an authentic and compassionate portrayal of Phil's narrative. Chris Clenshaw, executive producer, expressed his excitement about Keith's involvement in the show: "I'm delighted to welcome the incredibly talented Keith Allen to the cast of EastEnders as he takes on the guest role of Gaz in a special episode focusing on Phil's mental health. "As Phil struggles to begin treatment, we explore how his relationship with fellow patient Gaz, helps Phil to take the first step in his road to recovery."
