Eddie Jordan has left behind millions of pounds to his family after passing away following a battle with cancer. Jordan passed away in Cape Town on Thursday after living with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months. " EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went,” his family said in a statement. “We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow." Jordan was a much-loved personality in Formula 1 , where he went from team owner to popular pundit and media personality. The Irishman was one of the most recognisable faces associated with the sport, having got started in F1 back in 1979 by founding Eddie Jordan Racing. He was passionate about motorsport, having fallen in love with kart racing in his twenties, but was also a businessman. Jordan, who started out working in a bank before falling for motor racing, eventually sold his racing outfit to Midland Group in 2005 for £46million and his business acumen didn’t stop there. As well as his home in Cape Town, where he passed away, Jordan owned property in South Kensington, London, and Monaco. He had a love of the sea and owned as many as 10 Sunseeker superyachts over the years. His most lavish purchase was a 155ft, three-decked superyacht called Blush, which he took delivery of in 2014 . At the time, it was the biggest Sunseeker had ever built and set Jordan back a reported £32m. That is a lot to spend on a yacht, but Jordan clearly had the money available given that his net worth has been estimated at around €500m (£418m). “He was very clever, extremely astute and made shrewd investments over the years,” a source told The Sun . Jordan was a self-made man and is survived by his wife Marie and their four children Mikki, Zoe, Kyle and Zak. While best known for his connection to F1 – where he influenced drivers like Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill – Jordan had interests in many other areas, including other sports. He led the consortium which rescued rugby union club London Irish from administration and invested £1m of his own money into Celtic back in 2001 to become a major shareholder. The club said in a statement: “Eddie was a great fan of the club, a true friend to Celtic and a magnificent, passionate and heartfelt supporter of our charitable work through Celtic FC Foundation." His business interests stretched far and wide, with investments across industries such as oil, gaming , entertainment and real estate. His reputation as an astute businessman is shown by the fact that he has held advisory roles on the boards of major corporations. Over the years, Jordan has invested in a yacht company, property in Bulgaria and launched his own brands of vodka and energy drinks. In 2021 he founded JKO Capital alongside his friend and fellow businessman Keith O'Loughlin to invest in the entertainment and gaming industry. Remembering some business advice from Jordan for Business Leader , his former BBC Sport F1 colleague Jake Humphrey recalled he had said: “You need to get going in business. You need to have a business mind. You need to start thinking about what sort of businesses you could run.” When Humphrey replied that he didn’t know anything about business, Jordan shot back: “I’ve made up everything I’ve ever done. It’s all been a guess.”
