But he has struggled as he has moved up against tougher competition. What Berlanga does have is self-belief and confidence, which makes him a threat when you mix that confidence with his power. He displayed that cocksureness in 2024 when he faced Canelo Alvarez for Alvarez’s unified super middleweight title. Berlanga lost that fight by decision, but he did go 12 rounds with Alvarez. Berlanga followed that loss, the first and only defeat of his career with a first-round knockout of Jonathan González Ortiz in March of this year. He can’t be a one-trick pony. Another thing Berlanga cannot do is admire his power shots. He needs to be aware of his guard after unloading and scoring with power. Berlanga is a pressure fighter. He pushes forward and looks to land with power to the head and body. He should use that pressure early against Sheeraz, but he needs to keep his cool and confidence if he does not get an early knockout or score big in the first few stanzas. He is coming off a fight where he didn’t look his best and fought to a draw. He has a new trainer, and he is coming into “hostile” territory in facing Berlanga in New York. If he hopes to recapture his hype, he needs to put on a good showing on Saturday night. Sheeraz’s lanky frame would lead one to believe that he is someone who relies on distance to score. While he does work well from distance, the 26-year-old also carries power in his hands, scoring 15 straight knockouts on his run to his title fight against Adames. Sheeraz has also shown the ability to finish things when he has his opponent hurt. Sheeraz is skilled with his jab, but he can mix things up by using body shots when his opponent becomes accustomed to head shots. Sheeraz is also adept at timing; if his foe offers a slight opening, Sheeraz can exploit it and land a powerful strike. Sheeraz can bite on feints as the fight wears on, but that is not something he can afford against a power puncher like Berlanga. Sheeraz might not have won his last fight, but he should have learned some lessons by being in the ring for 12 rounds against a champion in Carlos Adames. It will be interesting to see how Sheeraz looks when he is not cutting so much weight; that’s an unknown heading into this matchup, where he will have a height and reach advantage.
