Fiji’s Ministry of Education is investigating a recent incident captured on video by a member of the public last Thursday that showed students on a bus throwing papers out onto the road.
Permanent secretary Selina Kuruleca expressed concerns about the incident saying the actions of the students obstructed traffic and created a hazardous situation for motorists.
She said the same incident escalated to the point where “the actions of these alleged students nearly resulted in a serious road accident”.
“Such behavior is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Ms Kuruleca said.
“The safety of students, as well as that of the general public, is of paramount importance.
“I remind all students that engaging in such disruptive and dangerous behavior is not only a violation of basic safety norms but also reflects poorly on your character, your family, your community, and the reputation of your school.
“This is a very serious matter, and an investigation is underway. We will be liaising closely with schools heads, LTA and parents to address this issue”
Ms Kuruleca urged parents to instill the values of responsibility, respect, and safety in their children.
She also reminded teachers to ensure continued supervision of duty of care during these last few weeks of the 2023 academic year.
“The ministry is committed to taking appropriate action against those involved and will work diligently to ensure a swift resolution to this matter,” the PS said.
