The Fijian Elections Office will update national voter registration cards to indicate eligibility for municipal elections.
On Tuesday the Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa told the Standing Committee on Public Accounts that voters would not need to carry separate cards for general and municipal elections.
“We will be update the national register of voters card to indicate that they are an electorate for the local government election,” she said.
The announcement came in response to Opposition Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj’s question about whether voters would need two separate cards for the different types of elections.
Ms Mataiciwa explained that municipal elections would have a separate register for local government electors, but this would be linked to the national register of voters.
“When it comes to local government election and as per the draft regulations for the conduct of the municipal elections, there will be a register for the local government electors,” she said.
One requirement for local government voting is that voters must already be registered in the national register.
It is still unconfirmed when municipal elections will be held this year, but Mr Maharaj noted that municipal elections were “hanging loose and can be held sometimes between September to December”.
The elections will allow citizens to vote for their local municipal council representatives who will govern city and town councils across the country.
Ms Mataiciwa’s clarification addresses concerns about the practical aspects of voter registration as Fiji prepares for both municipal elections and the 2026 General Election.
The updated voter cards will streamline the process and avoid confusion for voters who will be eligible to participate in both types of elections.
