Emi Martinez transfer detail complicates Aston Villa PSR headache
@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Emi Martinez’s future will remain a central focus of Aston Villa’s summer transfer window until a resolution is reached. The goalkeeper has attracted interest from the Premier League , across Europe and from Saudi Arabia as he considers starting a new chapter in his career. However, a move to Saudi Arabia is seen as unlikely, with Martinez keen to remain in European football at this stage. Manchester United are interested in the 32-year-old, but would need to move on Andre Onana before recruiting a new first-choice goalkeeper. Onana, for his part, is said to be content at Old Trafford and determined to prove himself next season following a couple of underwhelming campaigns since joining from Inter Milan. Atletico Madrid would also need to make room in their squad for the Villa man by moving on Jan Oblak, but there are no guarantees that will happen. Galatasaray have also been mentioned as a possible destination, though it’s unclear whether they could meet Villa’s asking price - or whether Martinez would be open to playing in Turkey. If Martinez does leave, Villa have a plan in place to replace him, with Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier reportedly under consideration. Lille are said to be asking around £40 million for Chevalier, who has two years remaining on his contract. Having already lost Angel Gomes and Jonathan David on free transfers this summer, Lille may be inclined to cash in on another of their prized assets while his market value remains high. A Martinez departure could also influence how Villa’s sporting director Monchi approaches the remainder of the summer window - particularly in relation to Premier League squad registration rules. Martinez qualifies as a homegrown player due to spending his early career at Arsenal. Currently, Villa have nine homegrown players in their squad: Martinez, Ross Barkley, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Ian Maatsen, Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins. Premier League rules stipulate that no more than 17 players in a 25-man squad can be non-homegrown. Therefore, at least eight senior squad members must meet the homegrown criteria. If Martinez were to leave, Villa would be reduced to just eight homegrown players - meaning they could not afford to lose another homegrown asset without signing a replacement who meets the same criteria. With PSR known to be holding several clubs back, including Villa, the sale of academy products has become an attractive proposition. Of the nine homegrown players, Ramsey is the only true academy product. Even last summer, Emery stood firm and refused to sell him, despite interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham. Selling both Ramsey and Martínez would leave a significant hole in the squad—one that would need to be filled by a new homegrown player. Ramsey was also the only 'club-trained' player Villa included in their UEFA squad for the Champions League knockout stage last season. For the 2025/26 Premier League season, Villa's Under-21 players must be born on or after 1 January 2004. Lamare Bogarde and Oliwier Zych fall into that category, but Louie Barry and Samuel Iling-Junior do not, as they were born before that date and would count as senior players. However, neither Barry nor Iling-Junior is expected to be part of Villa’s senior squad next season. Barry has interest from clubs looking to sign him permanently, while Iling-Junior is likely to leave on loan again following a promising spell at Middlesbrough last term.
