Emma Orr: Scotland will dig deep at World Cup after New Zealand nightmare

Biggar’s Emma Orr will be a huge part of Scotland’s Women’s World Cup campaign in England this summer, determined to exorcise the demons of New Zealand 2022. Scotland failed to win a game in the last iteration of the tournament, but head into their Pool B opener against Wales at the Salford Community Stadium on Sunday with confidence. Scotland’s seventh Women’s World Cup continues against Fiji at the same venue next Saturday, before moving to Sandy Park in Exeter where they face Canada on September 6. Orr, 22, who now has 30 caps to her name, was new to the international scene and recalls how she felt in New Zealand. She said: “Nobody wants to feel like that again, so we do use that as motivation to dig deep. “We really want to go out there and perform. There’s so much talent in the group and so much potential. “We’ve seen this year that it’s been pretty up and down results-wise to the Six Nations. I think we’re just going to try and put in 80-minute performances, when it really counts.” Former Biggar Rugby Club star Orr, who now plays for Bristol Bears, is looking forward to renewing her partnership with former Scotland captain Lisa Thomson in midfield. “We’ve played together for a while now, but it’s really good,” said centre Orr. “I’m really excited to see her go at the World Cup, because she’s in great form. “Playing outside her makes my job very easy, defensively especially. “She’s just a great person to learn from and play outside of. “You learn each other’s patterns and how our brains work on the rugby pitch. “It definitely takes time for that connection to build. Just simple things like knowing when to take off, or move, so you’re at the right point, when she’s at the right point. “Often, we’re talking about it at dinner when we should switch off!”
