In a significant moment for Papua New Guinea, recent developments in internet communications promise to transform the landscape of connectivity in the region.
Speaking at an event this morning in Mt Hagen, a community leader acknowledged the vital role played by key figures and organizations in making this transformation possible.
The Vice Minister for Police, Jacob Maki, along with a delegation from the National Broadband Network Carrier (NBNC), underscored the importance of their work in connecting the nation through advanced cable systems.
The primary accomplishment lies in the development of the Coral Sea Cable System.
This impressive infrastructure, linking Sydney to Port Moresby and further to Kila Kila Barracks, represents a crucial stride towards modernizing communication networks in Papua New Guinea.
This cable system is not only vital for enhancing internet access but also acts as a backbone for enhanced economic activities across the country. Moreover, the Kumul Submarine Cable Network Part One has made strides at the coast, ensuring that even remote coastal regions are not left behind in this technological advancement.
The inclusion of both these systems ensures that businesses, schools, and families across the country will benefit from faster, more reliable internet access, reducing the digital divide that has long existed in many areas.
In attendance at the event, Dr. Thomas Webster, chairman of PNG DataCo, reiterated the significance of this venture. With his extensive background as a former top bureaucrat, Dr. Webster emphasized the implications the new infrastructure has not only on connectivity but also on education, health, and overall economic growth.
He was joined by a diverse group of leaders, including directors Lucy Kallis, Albert Ayous, Desmond Blake, Timothy Pokara, and the long-serving CEO, Paul Conboy, whose achievements as an internationally recognized soccer player highlight a unique blend of sports and corporate leadership. Paul Conboy’s journey continues to inspire many, showcasing how skills acquired on the playing field can translate to significant leadership roles in business.
His presence during these pivotal discussions underscores the potential for collaboration between different sectors, further enriching the approach to national development. Additionally, the participation of Joyce Fogler and Thomas Pakuri from the National Department of Education signals a commitment to integrating enhanced connectivity into educational frameworks.
This linkage is essential in facilitating a modern learning environment where students can access global resources, thus preparing them for future challenges. Finally, a special acknowledgment was given to the Board of Governors of Hagen Secondary School, led by Chairman Mr. Mump.
Hagen Secondary School has a celebrated history of academic excellence, consistently ranked among the top institutions in the country. The unwavering commitment of the board and Mr. Mump’s leadership have proven instrumental in nurturing a generation of successful graduates. In conclusion, the collaboration between the government and the private sector in bolstering internet connectivity marks a turning point for Papua New Guinea.
As these projects unfold, they hold the potential to bridge gaps in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, ensuring a brighter, more connected future for all citizens.
