Erling Haaland has given a typically blunt assessment of Manchester City's season in which he accepted he has not done enough to help his side defend their Premier League title. Haaland has 30 goals in all competitions and is ready to play again after a month out. When he returns this weekend it will be the first time since he joined City that the club cannot call themselves Premier League champions, with Liverpool completing a deserved title win two weeks ago. While the striker was keen to take his own share of responsibility for City's inability to challenge Liverpool, he pointed to injury problems, but perhaps more worryingly, a lack of hunger as reasons behind falling behind domestically. "Of course, you can find excuses, injuries, many injuries at bad times, but in the end we haven't been performing well enough," Haaland told ESPN . "We haven't had fully the hunger inside of us. I haven't been good enough. I haven't helped the team enough. In the end, we haven't been good enough." Haaland was back on the bench last week against Wolves but didn't come on in a tight 1-0 win. Pep Guardiola said after the game that he expects the striker to be ready for Saturday's trip to Southampton. A return at St Mary's will be useful with the FA Cup final following a week later. For his part, Haaland says he is ready to play against Southampton after training all week. "It was horrible to be injured, but what can you do?," he said. "You have to recover as quickly as you can and to come back as fit as you can. Now I'm back with loads of energy.
