The fourth edition of the European Film Festival officially opened on May 16 at Damodar City cinemas in Suva, bringing a vibrant and free celebration of European cinema to local audiences.
European Union Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, described the event as a key moment in the EU’s cultural calendar in the region.
“This event is of particular importance in our annual calendar of events,” she said, “as it’s such a great opportunity to bring Europe closer to audiences all around the world — even in places that are really far away from Europe, like Fiji.”
Running until May 24, this year’s festival features 10 films from nine EU countries, including France, Germany, Denmark, Portugal and Romania. “We hope to share some of this rich diversity with cinema lovers here in Fiji through the selection of films that we present,” Ambassador Plinkert said, “helping to foster cultural exchange and understanding between Fiji and the European Union.”
The films reflect universal themes such as education, human rights, family bonds, and the environment. “It’s also a reminder of what unites us as human beings all around the world,” she noted.
All screenings are free and open to the public.
The festival will also travel to the Northern Division with screenings in Damodar Labasa on May 23 and 24.
Damodar Group CEO Div Damodar praised the growing popularity of the festival and its role in creating dialogue and community engagement through cinema.
“We’ve seen the European Film Festival grow bigger and bigger,” he said. “Cinema is now a place where it opens discussions, including topics we used to keep taboo. It’s become a centre for youth to come together.”
The 2025 European Union Film Festival runs in Suva from May 16 to 24 and in Labasa on May 23 and 24.
