Evan Ferguson - "It's always good to score a goal, especially for your country"

Evan Ferguson netted his fifth international goal in nineteen games - and it was a stunner. Taking the ball in midfield, he raced at the Bulgaria defence who were back-pedalling furiously. Passing the ball inside to Finn Aziz, Ferguson kept running and took the return. Boom! The 20 year-old smashed it home and Ireland, now 1-1, were masters of their own destiny again, in position to take the tie on aggregate on the back of winning the first leg 1-0. "It's always good to score a goal, especially for your country. We've been doing it in training, different patterns with Mikey out wide and the opposite. It was just a case of driving and luckily Finn picked me back out. "I think it was, not frustrating, but we've had a few games now when we go into the break 1-0 down when we've been the better team. We had conceded a lucky chance. "I think because we've faced that a few times that we know to stay patient and bounce back like we have done. Two wins from two. I think we were the better side in both games. No disrespect to Bulgaria but I think we have the better players and played the better football." The striker's score came at an opportune time, having taken a wrong option minutes beforehand that would have disappointed. "The past year I've learned to deal with frustrations like that. Wipe it out of your head and move on to the next. "There has been ups and downs so you learn to live with it and move on. That is just how football is." But there was little doubt the Ferguson-Parrott combination was working. "I thought we did alright. We worked on it in training a bit, we didn't have much time on the pitch but I played there a little bit before for Ireland and me and Troy play well together. It was just about playing more in the position and find my way around. It's always good to score. It's my job now." Ferguson has been learning to live with those who have big expectations for him. "There is nothing really I can do about it, it is other people having that expectation of you and you have that expectation of yourself, that you want to do well every time you play football. But you can’t control what other people think or do. "I have had more bad than good in the recent times but I have got used to it, don’t really care what is being said. I am in a good place, feel positive mentally and physically. There has been some frustration at West Ham but hopefully this goal will help. "Yeah of course, everyone wants to play and when you don't it is frustrating so when you have your chance you have to take the minutes as you get them."
