Every Rusical from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ Ranked Worst to Best
@Source: billboard.com
Concept: Much like the Madonna and Cher Rusicals, JOAN: The Unauthorized Rusical offers up a simple but productive biopic-esque formula to follow in terms of plot. Joan Crawford, gay icon that she is, certainly makes for a meaty subject in this well-structured story of her career. There’s plenty of opportunity here for queens to chew the scenery and protest the inclusion of wire hangers, meaning it’s a Rusical everyone should be able to get behind. Execution: Now this is how you perform a Rusical. None of the queens were standouts for poor execution — the decision to put Jaymes and Kahanna in the bottom felt like a problem stemming from their roles rather than their performances. But plenty of queens immediately stood out — Kandy Muse, Jessica Wild and Alexis Michelle brought all of the exceptional screeches and dramatics that you would hope to see in a Joan Crawford musical. But the top of the top, in our view, was Lala Ri’s recreation of Mildred Pierce-era Joan with perfectly-over-the-top, deliciously unhinged performance of “Let’s Go Joan.” Music: While Joan may not be as immediately catchy as some of the entries later on in this list, it’s still safe to say that Leland did a exceptional job composing wholly original tracks for this reality television musical. With full songs like “No More Wire Hangers,” “Bring Me the Axe” and “Let’s Go Joan” immediately standing out as pitch-perfect creations, this Rusical proves once again that the songwriting and producing put into these challenges remains top-tier. Overall: When bringing Joan Crawford’s story to the mainstage of Drag Race, the queens, producers and songwriters all made sure that JOAN: The Unauthorized Rusical was an affair to rememeber. Don’t f–k with ’em, fellas! This ain’t their first time at the rodeo!
