Ex-Man City star who Pep Guardiola thought was 'special' linked with Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham

A Manchester City academy graduate who Pep Guardiola previously hailed as "special" could potentially make a move to Wrexham this summer. The Red Dragons, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney , are reportedly in a three-way tussle to snap up ex-City midfielder Tommy Doyle . Fellow Championship side Birmingham City and newly-promoted Premier League outfit Sunderland are also believed to be keen on the 23-year-old midfielder, who is currently at Wolves . The West Midlands club are thought to be considering loaning him out after he struggled to secure regular playing time under Vitor Pereira last term, as reported by the Express and Star . Doyle's game time was limited to just 12 appearances in the Premier League following the appointment of the Portuguese manager, who took over from Gary O'Neil in December. He initially joined Wolves on loan from City two years ago before making the switch permanent for a fee of around £4million last summer. A product of City's youth system, Doyle is the grandson of club legends Glyn Pardoe and Mike Doyle. His abilities were singled out for praise by City manager Guardiola following his senior outing against Swansea in the FA Cup in February 2021. After a 30-minute cameo in which he replaced Ilkay Gundogan during a 3-1 victory, Doyle's display caught the attention of Guardiola, who spoke highly of his skills. Speaking after the match, he said: "He is a good player, it's not the first time playing in the games," said Guardiola. "He's a player with a special quality. He takes it, shoots. Another Man City fan. A historic family, the historic Doyle family." Doyle also received commendations from his former City team-mate Kyle Walker , who spoke highly of his approach when stepping up to the first team. "Tommy, what a great player," Walker said. "And a good lad as well. An exciting talent, he wants to learn and it's a pleasure working with him. I've seen plenty of kids come through the ranks at numerous clubs with a chip on their shoulder but he's very good and very down to earth." Doyle has clocked up 50 Premier League appearances for Wolves, including a total of 24 outings last season. He also helped Sheffield United earn promotion from the Championship two years ago during a loan stint. Wrexham are keen to strengthen their squad as they gear up to compete in the second tier for the first time in 43 years next season. It follows Phil Parkinson's team achieving a third consecutive promotion from League One in April. To date, striker Ryan Hardie and goalkeeper Danny Ward are Wrexham's two summer transfer acquisitions. Doyle's potential departure from Wolves was sparked after manager Pereira expressed doubts about how well he was suited to the team's counter-attacking style of play. Speaking in April, he said: "Technically-speaking, he's a very good player, but in my opinion he's missing the physicality to face this league. To run 50 metres, to come back 50 metres and then go 50 metres again. "We are not a team to have 80 per cent of possession, so he has problems. If we are a team that has the ball every time, doesn't allow counter-attacks and keeps the ball to dominate the opponent, this is the team for him. "But we need to understand that we face top teams, top players. We need to run a lot and he's missing this physicality, especially when we play with two midfielders. With three midfielders, I believe he is a 10 with high quality. The last pass, shots, crosses – he has those skills."
