Ex-Prisoner Left Note in Rory McIlroy's Locker Room, Inspired Masters Glory
@Source: newsweek.com
Rory McIlroy exorcised his demons at The Masters on Sunday, taking home the Green Jacket in a playoff after one of the most dramatic final rounds in major championship history.McIlroy's scars at Augusta National go way back, all the way back to his final-round 80 in 2011. Ahead of the final round on Sunday, 14 years later, McIlroy opened his locker up to an unexpected surprise from Angel Cabrera."You know, since 2011, I think it's so ironic, as well. I got to my locker this morning and I opened it up, and there was a note in there from Angel Cabrera, and just wishing me luck," McIlroy said after his win."And Angel Cabrera was the player I played with on the final day in 2011, it was a nice touch and a little bit ironic at the same time. It's been 14 long years, but thankfully I got the job done."Cabrera walked the course that day 14 years ago with a 21-year-old McIlroy, who fell apart on the back nine and watched a four-shot lead slip away as Charles Schwartzel took control of the tournament and eventually won.It was a great gesture from the 2009 champion, who played this year on an exemption and missed the cut.Of course, Cabrera's participation in the 2025 Masters was somewhat controversial. He recently spent 30 months in prison, having been convicted of multiple counts of domestic violence charges against two former girlfiends.McIlroy wasn't able to get over the hump on Sunday without his struggles. He started the day with a double bogey on the first hole before later admitting that he was very nervous going off the opening tee.After building his lead back up to four shots, he inexplicably hit a wedge shot into Rae's Creek on No. 13, causing another double bogey. A bogey on No. 14 took him out of the lead momentarily before it came back to him at 10-under.On the 72nd hole, McIlroy missed a four-foot putt for par to win The Masters. However, he hit a perfect wedge shot on the first playoff hole to beat Justin Rose with a clutch birdie.Who knows? Maybe that message from Cabrera before the round helped McIlroy put Sunday's struggles behind him like he wasn't able to do all those years ago with Cabrera alongside him.More Golf: Rory McIlroy Reveals Tiger Woods Inspiration after Winning the Masters
