Explained: Why Was MI's Ryan Rickelton Called Back Despite Getting Out Vs SRH In IPL 2025?

In a rare moment in IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians opener Ryan Rickelton walked all the way to his pavilion after getting out against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)’s spinner Zeeshan Ansari but was called back by the umpires a few minutes later at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. It happened on the fifth ball of the seventh over in the second innings. Rickelton slashed at a wide ball and ended up giving a catch to covers, where Pat Cummins was sharp as ever. As SRH celebrated, Rickelton walked back and advertisement breaks took over the broadcast, the fourth official stopped the batter. Later, the replays panned to the side-angle on the striker’s end. It wasn’t a check for a waist-high no-ball. Instead, SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen had a tiny part of his gloves ahead of Rickelton’s stumps before he made contact with the ball, and hence had to be called a no-ball. Rickelton came back and faced a free-hit the next ball, surviving only less than an over before Harshal Patel got him out. This rule is mentioned under the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)’s Law 27 concerning the wicketkeeper. It’s described below: 27.3 Position of wicket-keeper 27.3.1 The wicket-keeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the moment the ball comes into play until a ball delivered by the bowler touches the bat or person of the striker or passes the wicket at the striker’s end or the striker attempts a run. 27.3.2 In the event of the wicket-keeper contravening this Law, the striker’s end umpire shall call and signal No ball as soon as applicable after the delivery of the ball. This was the second time in this match that a wicket fell on a no-ball. In the first innings, MI skipper Hardik Pandya got Travis Head caught on a no-ball, but the siren went off for overstepping when the home side were celebrating. As it happened, even Head got out in the following over to Will Jacks’ part-time spin.
