Ex-Premier League referee David Coote has been hit with multiple charges from the Football Association after his outburst involving derogatory comments directed at Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. In a video that surfaced on social media channels in November last year, Coote was caught using offensive language, labelling Liverpool as "s**t" and branding Klopp "a German c**t". Coote was dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) the month after an investigation into various other claims reported by the press. The FA had already opened their investigation and have now decided on action against Coote, who had also received a ban from UEFA due to his behaviour concerning Euro 2024 earlier in February. In a statement, the FA said "David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. "It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1. "It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference - whether express or implied - to nationality." Regarding the allegations linked to gambling misbehaviour tied to Coote, the FA confirmed: "No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated." A video emerged online showing referee Coote making controversial remarks about Liverpool and Klopp, just two days after he officiated the Premier League match between Liverpool and Aston Villa at Anfield in November, where Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory, reports the Liverpool Echo . The clip captures Coote in conversation with an unidentified individual, discussing his experience as the fourth official at a recent Liverpool match. A photo displayed later on Coote's phone in the video implies it was during Liverpool's 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa in October 2020. "Liverpool were s***," Coote appears to say in the footage. When probed for his opinion on Klopp, the response captured in the video is: "A c**t, an absolute (unintelligible). Aside from having a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown, when he accused me of lying then just had a right f***ing pop at me, I've got no interest in speaking to somebody who is f***ing arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. (James) Milner is all right. "But, my God, a German c***t, f*** me."
