FACT CHECK: Is Saiyaara REALLY A Moment To Remember's Remake? I've Watched Both Bollywood And Korean Movies; Here's The Verdict...
@Source: timesnownews.com
Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has become a surprise package served to us in the most unexpected manner. A movie sans any promotions, social media buzz or interviews was a risky preposition. With only its trailer, songs and Mohit Suri brand riding on it was a gamble, given how pulling the audience with new faces has become challenging in the era of "content is king." But the risk did its job of arousing extreme curiosity, enough for the movie to break presale of tickets' records. Upon release on July 18, the movie did not disappoint. However, amid all the good reviews, there was a certain something that grabbed the attention of some eagle-eyed viewers. Saiyaara reminded many of A Moment To Remember! Netizens call Saiyaara a remake of A Moment To Remember So is Saiyaara a remake of this Korean classic? Why are some fans on social media connecting the two movies? What's the similarity? I'll be honest, when A Moment To Remember's name popped up, I was disappointed (it's one of my all-time favourite movies). I even wondered whether I should willingly spoil my memory of this beautiful poignant movie. I watched this one way back in 2004 when it released. However, post Saiyaara, I was convinced... And the verdict is... Saiyaara is not a remake of A Moment To Remember per say. Yes, there are some very crucial plot points and portions that might have a similarity with the Korean film (along with some other titles too), but that doesn't make it a copy. About A Moment To Remember A Moment To Remember has over the years become a fan-favourite. It emerged a global hit and continues to find its audience. The movie stars Son Ye-Jin, who every K-drama lover would know as the female lead of the blockbuster Crash Landing On You. This one is from her early days when she did more movies than TV shows. Its male lead, Jung Woo-Sung more recently came in news in 2024 after getting embroiled in a major controversy when he was revealed to be the father of model Moon Ga-Bi's son. A Moment To Remember follows Choi Chul-Soo and Kim Su-Jin from different social status, who meet under unexpected circumstances, fall in love and get married, only to find out later that the wife suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's disease. As they struggle through keeping their lives and marriage intact, things keep getting worse, until she leaves their home and checks herself into an assisted facility. The husband stays strongly by her side as she grapples with falling memory at the centre until she forgets him completely. The movie ends on how he recreates the scene when they first met at a convenient store, and continues to hold her hand even when she doesn't remember him. Portions in Saiyaara that are similar to A Moment To Remember The fact that Aneet Padda's character Vaani also suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's disease in Saiyaara is a strong connection. But we've seen several movies in both Bollywood and Hollywood, like 50 First Dates (anterograde amnesia) and U Me Aur Hum on similar lines. Secondly, even Vaani walks out of Krish's (Ahaan Panday) life, just like Kim Su-Jin. But she does it unannounced, unlike Su-Jin. Thirdly, both the female leads have ex-boyfriend issues, but Saiyaara builds on that more strongly. That's about it! Saiyaara did not have any class issue, an important angle in the Korean original, or professional slump and trouble to fulfill dreams and aspirations. Many might argue that Saiyaara's core plot around Alzheimer's cracks the remake deal, but this one had a back story with healing as a strong point for both the characters, along with music being its weapon. And we even know the end. But the manner in which Mohit Suri weaved the romance in a delicate manner, with an electrifying chemistry between the lead pair, even if he got inspired in certain portions, definitely makes it a must-watch.
