The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Thursday that Ravindra Jadeja broke the world record of holding the longest streak as the No. 1 all-rounder in Test cricket’s history.
BCCI posted on X that Jadeja has been world No. 1 in the men’s Test all-rounder’s ranking for 1152 days.

Since making his debut against England in Nagpur on December 13, 2012, Jadeja has played 80 Test matches for India.
Jadeja does lead the all-rounder list in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) latest rankings with 400 rating points. Jadeja overtook West Indies’ Jason Holder on March 9, 2022 and has been holding on to the top spot ever since.
But according to a report in the Wisden, Jadeja’s record may not entirely be true.
ICC maintains a comprehensive database of historical ICC rankings, including date-specific and player-specific pages. According to ICC, former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis held the top spot as the No.1 ranked all-rounder in Test cricket from December 19, 2006, to December 19, 2011 – which is 1,827 days or just over five years, easily surpassing Jadeja’s current achievement.
In fact, Kallis also had a separate stretch of 1,149 days at the top of the rankings, between March 12, 2002, and May 3, 2005. Jadeja recently surpassed this mark, which could have led to the possibility that it was mistakenly flagged as a world record.
ICC rankings were developed in 1987 and retrospectively applied to Test cricket, which means that rankings are currently available for players before that time, which wasn’t the case when they were actively playing.
Among the pre-1987 players, West Indies great Garfield Sobers holds the record for the longest unbroken run as the world’s No.1 Test all-rounder. Between February 20, 1962, and March 10, 1974, he maintained his position at the top of the standings for an impressive 12 years, a total of 4,402 days.
Unless there’s an error and ICCdoesn’t follow this methodology, Jadeja’s current streak is can’t officially be recognised as a world record.
