It’s no secret that Cooperstown is baseball’s proud hometown.
But America’s favorite pastime isn’t the only sport players can enjoy in the ever-charming Upstate New York village.
The Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown has been named the second-best public golf course in the United States by USA Today’s 10Best. The historic lakeside course was only bested by Bully Pulpit, a golf course in North Dakota’s Badlands.
As with all 10Best Readers Choice competitions, the nominees for the best public golf course contest were selected by a panel of experts. After the final set of nominees was narrowed down by USA Today editors, readers voted for the winners — vaulting the Central New York course into the No. 2 spot.
The stunning Leatherstocking Golf Course hugs the shore of Otsego Lake, a lake aptly nicknamed “Glimmerglass” by author James Fenimore Cooper. It was designed in 1909 by famous golf course architect Devereux Emmet and is part of the luxurious Otesaga Resort Hotel.
According to the Otesaga, the course is among the “most scenic and challenging resort golf courses” on the East Coast.
In its roundup of the best public golf courses in America, 10Best writers said Leatherstocking has reigned as one of the top golf courses in the country for over a century.
The 18-hole course offers golfers great views as they travel along the rolling terrain. It features two finishing holes: a par 3 that requires golfers to play up to 195 yards over water and a par 5 with an island tee and a fairway along Otsego Lake.
After putting your golfing skills to the test at the challenging Leatherstocking course, stop by the Otesaga’s Hawkeye Bar & Grill for a meal on the patio with the best view in Cooperstown.
Then meander your way around the village’s walkable Main Street, where quirky shops and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum await.
The Leatherstocking Golf Course is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spring specials that range from $59 to $79 per round — and include a golf cart — can be booked through May 16, according to the Otesaga.
