No one had come close to breaking the world record before Chebet took a shot at it in Rabat, and Kipyegon in Silesia.Following that attempt in Rabat, Chebet went on to break the world record in the 5,000m at the Prefontaine Classic on July 5 this year, becoming the first woman to run the distance in less than 14 minutes when she timed 13:58.06.On the other hand, Kipyegon, the four-time world 1,500m champion, broke her own 1,500m world record at the same Prefontaine Classic race, running 3:48.68, making her the only woman in history to run below 3:50.Kipyegon’s personal best in 3,000m was just 8:23.55, which she ran 11 years ago at the 2014 Doha Diamond League.“It is all about Tokyo now. I am so happy. I wanted to run a longer distance. To be honest, I did not see the clock on the finish line because I was so tired,” Kipyegon said. She acknowledged she came close to breaking the record.“But today it was very hot. I want to come back here next year. I enjoyed the atmosphere, I am happy about it. I am grateful for what I have done,” she explained, adding that she enjoys attempting world records and breaking them.Kipyegon, who will be defending her world 5,000m title in Tokyo said that it is a championship race where anything can happen.Meanwhile, Chebet finished second in 1,500m in personal best 3:54.73, losing the battle to world 10,000m champion Tsegay Gudaf, who clocked a Meeting Record of 3:50.62.“I came here to test my speed, and I got a personal best. I enjoyed the race and the atmosphere. I was a bit afraid to follow the speed, but I told myself, let me try and run, and it worked,” said Chebet, who will be eying another double at the world championships after her Paris Olympics exploits. The 2019 world 1,500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot rallied from behind to deep for second place in the men's 1,500m race in 3:33.35 as American Yared Nuguse won in 3:33.19.
