Famous Grand National jockey went out with royalty but now has new career

Legendary National Hunt racing figure Richard Johnson had an illustrious career that included dating royalty and setting records at the Grand National. Johnson left school at 16 to ride for the late champion trainer David Nicholson and quickly made his mark in Grade 1 racing. He became one of the top jockeys on the jumps scene, amassing significant prize money and becoming a regular fixture at Aintree. His off-track life also garnered attention, particularly his high-profile relationship with Zara Phillips, a member of the Royal Family who is now married to former England rugby star Mike Tindall. We delve into the life of this Grand National-loving jockey, exploring his impressive career, record-breaking performances, Royal romance, and new business venture. A record-breaking career Johnson's list of victories during his time in the saddle is extensive. He won every feature race at the Cheltenham Festival, including two Gold Cups at the major March meeting, reports the Mirror. The staggering total of 3,819 winners achieved by the jockey is mind-boggling, with only the legendary AP McCoy having ridden more. It was through these rides, provided by a range of trainers, including Willie Mullins, Philip Hobbs and Colin Tizzard, that Johnson secured the title of Champion Jockey four times - a figure that could have been much higher if not for McCoy. Planet Sport estimates that the Englishman amassed £34million in prize money throughout his illustrious career. However, despite his numerous victories and record-breaking statistics, the National was one race that sadly eluded him. National shortcomings Johnson and the Grand National were synonymous for decades. From 1997 to 2016, the 47-year-old took part in every single renewal, with a final appearance in 2019 bringing his total number of appearances to 21 - a record that still stands today and is unlikely to be surpassed. However, while Johnson holds the record for the most National appearances, he also unfortunately holds the record for the most rides in the race without ever winning it. Johnson guided the runner-up home twice, in 2002 with What's Up Boys and in 2014 with three-time competitor Balthazar King - but the title always slipped through his fingers. In fact, out of the 21 times Johnson competed in the big race, he only completed all 30 fences on six occasions. Royal fling Johnson found as much attention for his public relationship with Tindall as he did for his equestrian accomplishments when their romance became official in 1998, captivating the media all the while. Speaking to Blond Illusion in 2002, he opened up about their connection: "Zara and I used to go out in the same crowd, and gradually, we became closer. It wasn't a bolt from the blue. It was something that just grew." However, by 2003, Johnson and Tindall's relationship had wavered and ultimately dissolved. Despite this, they have managed to maintain a cordial rapport, often spotted conversing at racing events. Johnson has since married, tying the knot with Fiona Chance, the daughter of renowned trainer Noel Chance. A new career Embracing new horizons beyond the weighing room, Johnson has set foot into horse ownership, establishing the Richard Johnson Racing syndicate. The syndicate came into being in 2023, offering enthusiasts a slice of the racehorse ownership excitement. As of January 2025, they boast a roster of four horses. Johnson shared insights into the structure of his venture: "There are 10 owners in all our syndicates, and we believe that makes it good fun, and they all feel involved. Most importantly, hopefully, people enjoy the experience of being an owner and enjoy going racing."
