A retired volleyball player was allegedly kidnapped and murder by his girlfriend’s former husband on Thursday night. Everton Pereira Fagundes da Conceição, whose was also known as ‘Everton Boi,’ was abducted at gunpoint and shot three times in Cuiabá, a city in the west-central state of Mato Grosso. The 46-year-old was driving his pickup truck when the suspect, Iderlei Pacheco, struck him in the head, investigators allege. Surveillance footage showed Everton Boi losing control of his vehicle and slamming head-on into another car next to a gas station at 11:16 pm local time. Pacheco was seen abandoning the pickup truck just seconds after the crash and fled in another vehicle. Paramedics arrived on the scene and confirmed Everton Boi’s death. Everton Boi’s girlfriend visited a local police station and told agents that he had been kidnapped several hours before he was murdered, the Mato Grosso Military Police said. The Mato Grosso Civil Police is leading the investigation. They haven't outlined a motive, or commented on whether Pachecho allegedly committed the crime because he was jealous of his ex's new lover. It is also unclear how long Everton Boi had been with his girlfriend for at the time of her death and how long ago she'd split from her former husband. Everton Boi was born in the Mato Grosso town of Várzea Grande and was the son of João Fagundes da Conceição, who played soccer in the 1980s. As a 16-year-old, he starred on the Brazil’s under-19 national team and helped them win the 1995 FIVB World Championship in Puerto Rico. He was also part of the squad that won the South American Championship the following year in Paraguay. Everton Boi played for Brazilian clubs Fiat/Minas, Suzano, São Caetano, and Vôlei Futuro as well in international leagues in Argentina, Japan and Spain. "It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of former Brazilian national team player and U-19 World Cup champion Everton Fagundes Boi,” the Mato Gross Volleyball Federal said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
