Fans say the same thing about Andy Farrell's 'criminal' Lions selection

British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has named his squad for the first Test with Australia this weekend - and it's fair to say it's caused a bit of a stir. The decision to omit Jac Morgan , while not unexpected, has been met with a cocktail of bafflement, dismay and, in some cases, outright anger. The move comes despite Morgan putting in some encouraging displays on this tour, but does nevertheless further underline the decline of Welsh rugby in recent years. His absence hasn't really come as a shock, however, with reports emerging on Wednesday that Tom Curry would start in the number seven jersey, but it will nevertheless leave a bitter taste for many fans on this side of the border. The 25-year-old was already one of two Welshman in the touring party, but became his nation's sole representative when Tomos Williams pulled out with injury. This move means the Lions will head into a Test without a single Welshman in their squad for the first time since 1896, a sobering statistic that should alarm everyone in Welsh rugby. In total, the matchday squad for the first Test in Brisbane contains 11 players from Ireland, nine from England and three from Scotland. But while expected, the decision to leave out Morgan entirely has still left plenty of fans puzzled, with many taking to social media to voice their confusion. "Jac Morgan not making the 23 is absolutely criminal," said one. "Jac Morgan not being included AT ALL is absolute insanity," another claimed. "If he’s picking the best in terms of form right now, Jac Morgan has to start. Travesty," one supporter claimed. One fan even went so far as to suggest some of Morgan's team-mates might well be surprised by the decision. "Other players in that Lions squad will be looking at Jac Morgan as someone who has played himself into the 23," they said. "They will be scratching their heads at his omission & wondering if there is any point in the midweek game, when Farrell will just pick his favourites regardless." Meanwhile, some believe Henry Pollock was equally as unlucky not to get a look in. "No Jac Morgan and Pollock is a bit strange, fully thought at least one of them would be on the bench," one fan said. "In a similar regard, Tom being the engine that we all know that we need in regards to Test match football." When asked how close Morgan was to selection, Farrell said at his press conference on Thursday: "As close as you could imagine. "Look, you're gutted for players like that and Josh as well, and Henry as well, because they're playing good rugby and could easily be in this side on Saturday, but I suppose that shows the good place that we're at as a group." The Lions take on Australia in the SunCorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday. Kick-off is at 11am BST.
