A Copa Sudamericana match between Argentina's Independiente and Universidad de Chile in Buenos Aires turned chaotic after violent clashes between rival fans, resulting in injuries to 10 people. The last-16 second leg encounter was suspended at the halfway mark, and later abandoned at 1-1 after the Chilean fans hurled objects, including stones, sticks, bottles, and a stun grenade, at local fans seated at the lower stand. This resulted in the home fans storming into the away section and beating, stripping the Chilean fans of their clothes. Images of Chilean fans jumping or falling from the upper deck of the stands to escape the attack were widely circulated on social media. Meanwhile, the police arrested 90 fans related to the violence. "We have 90 people detained outside the stadium because they tried to cause trouble, and they have already been taken to police station," a security ministry official told AFP. Chile's ambassador to Argentina, Jose Antonio Viera-Gallo, condemned the attack on visiting fans and reported stab wounds among injuries, also confirming serious injury to one fan. "This level of violence cannot be tolerated," wrote Chilean international Felipe Loyola, who plays for Independiente, on social media. "I don't know where the police were." FIFA President Gianni Infantino also fumed at the violence and strongly condemned the clashes. “I strongly condemn the shocking violence which led to the cancellation of the Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile,” FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino said in a statement. “Violence has no place in soccer — players, fans, staff, officials, and everyone who enjoys our beautiful game should be able to do so without fear.” This was not the first case of violence in South American soccer competitions. Last April, Chile’s Colo Colo was deducted points and received a financial penalty after two fans were killed during clashes between fans and police before the match against Fortaleza of Brazil in the first round of the Copa Libertadores.
