@Source: postcourier.com.pg
NEW Team on the Block, FC NSI is a Goroka Football Club established this year and registered with Goroka Soccer Association. Members of the team are made up of staff and children of NSI and Goroka Lodge staff and families. The others also who joined that live around National Sports Institute. Team Manager Peter Sevara said: They have just started this year with the assistance of PNG Kapuls goal keeper Ishmael Pole as our head coach. “We initially started as Futsal club and our Masters, Senior men’s and U13 boys made the finals. U13 and Masters won the grand final while senior’s men were runner ups. From there we decided to join the 11 a side competition last month. So, we still have long way to go.” Coach Pole added that due to no competition in Goroka for the last three years, so before they kicked off the soccer season this year, they started with Futsal to bring interest. “And that is how we started FC NSI. We have different divisions. From U10mix to Masters. So, most of the players playing in the master’s divisions are NSI and Goroka Lodge staff members.” Pole said after the Futsal finals, we saw that we had numbers so with the help of NSI management and Goroka Lodge Owner Warrick Wild we managed to register our team into Goroka Soccer Association proper season. “We appointed our team executives, most of them are young people and we all are new to those roles. Goroka Lodge owner Warrick Wild was appointed as our club president, and hails from Bena district in Eastern Highlands and New Zealand, he as no soccer background and is a rugby player. Pole said when he was there coaching, he got Wild interested in the code and when he came on board he helped the club a lot. “So, it’s good you start a team in the highlands where rugby dominate but to get people like him and NSI management to support its pretty special and for me personally soccer left Goroka and people lost interest but it’s good now we can see everyone wants to come and play soccer.”
