Fiji Bans Grouper, Coral Trout Fishing
@Source: fijisun.com.fj
The Ministry of Fisheries has announced a seasonal ban on catching, keeping, moving, or selling Grouper (kawakawa) and Coral Trout (donu) from June 1 to September 30, 2025. In a statement, the ministry stressed that the four-month restriction is part of a broader national strategy to safeguard the two species during their peak breeding season. The seasonal ban, which was first introduced by the government in 2019, aims to prevent overfishing and support the long-term sustainability of Fiji’s marine ecosystems. “These species are highly valued for both their market and cultural significance,” the ministry noted. “However, their predictable spawning behaviour makes them especially vulnerable to overharvesting.” The ban targets the critical reproductive window when majority of spawning occurs, ensuring that fish populations have a chance to replenish. According to the ministry, protecting these species during this time will lead to healthier fish stocks, more productive fisheries, and more stable income for local fishers in the long run. While acknowledging the economic importance of grouper and coral trout, the Ministry stressed that the conservation measure is designed to strike a balance between environmental protection and the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing.
