The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) will seek legal action against the Fiji Sports Council (Council) if the double booking of the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on July 12 is not resolved.
This was revealed to SUNsports yesterday by Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf.
Fiji FA has secured the venue from July 5 to July 19 for the Oceania Football Confederations (OFC) Women’s Nations Cup. They (Fiji FA) have made the bookings with the full payment done last November.
However, the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) confirmed on April 2 that they will host the Scotland Test match at the same venue on July 12.
Questions sent to the Council on February 9 and yesterday regarding the matter have not been answered when this edition went to press last night.
Yusuf reiterated to SUNsports that they are firm with their decision and would not accommodate the July rugby Test match.
He added that Fiji could be banned by FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) and OFC from hosting international and regional events if the Test (rugby) match is given green light and they cannot afford the consequences.
“We have written to the Fiji Sports Council and are awaiting their response,” Yusuf said yesterday.
“OFC has not allowed the ground to be used on this ambush approval for a third party.
“We have mentioned if this is not sorted out we will get our solicitors to go to court for an injunction as we do not want women’s football to be denied the opportunity to host and play matches in Fiji.”
In an earlier interview Yusuf said this was not the first time Council had asked the national football sporting body to accommodate rugby matches within their booking period.
He indicated Fiji FA had received a warning from FIFA when they accommodated the Fijiana XVs match against Japan previously.
“This is serious matter and FRU is fully aware of situation,” he added.
FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu has not responded to the questions sent to him yesterday.
Meanwhile, Yusuf confirmed two clubs in the country have submitted their application for the OFC Pro League to kick-off next year.
