Fire crews responding to fire burning off Highway 33 (Kelowna)

UPDATE: 2:50 p.m. Two helicopters are actively bucketing the fire burning off Highway 33, while at least two airtankers have dropped retardant on it. The fire continues to burn between Highway 33 at the hairpin corner and Goudie Road, but it appears to be moving in the northeast direction. The BC Wildfire Service has most recently estimated its size at 0.8 hectares. A number of crews from various local municipal fire departments are on scene, while the BC Wildfire Service crews are providing assistance from both the ground and air. Castanet reporter Cindy White is on scene and says the two helicopters and two airtankers are hitting the fire hard from above. Highway 33 remains closed in both directions while fire crews tackle the fire. UPDATE: 2:15 p.m. Air resources are heading to the fire burning off Highway 33 near Kelowna. A BC Wildfire Service fire information officer tells Castanet that a four-person initial attack crew are responding to the fire, along with a helicopter and airtankers. These resources are in addition to the municipal fire crews that are already on scene fighting the fast-moving fire. Tactical evacuations are underway for some homes in the area, although it's not clear how many. Castanet reporter Cindy White is on scene and reports trees in the area are candling from the fire, and the blaze appears to be burning right up to Goudie Road from the Highway 33 hairpin. Police have now closed Highway 33 to traffic. UPDATE: 1:55 p.m. Fire crews on scene of the grass fire burning near Highway 33 have requested the RCMP's help in conducting tactical evacuations of homes near the fast-moving fire. The grass fire was first reported near the hairpin turn at Highway 33 near Goudie Road, but it appears to be spreading fast uphill. A large plume of smoke from the fire is visible from across the Kelowna area. It's not clear how close the fire is currently burning to homes in the area, but firefighters have requested the RCMP's assistance to notify residents of evacuations, and to manage traffic. The Kelowna Fire Department has also contacted the BC Wildfire Service for assistance. ORIGINAL: 1:40 p.m. Emergency crews are responding to a grass fire Sunday afternoon that's burning off Highway 33 at the hairpin corner near Goudie Road. The fire was called in just before 1:30 p.m., and Kelowna Fire Department crews have now arrived on scene. First reports from the scene indicate the fire has spread uphill from the hairpin corner, towards Goudie Road. It's not clear at this time if vehicles are still getting through on Highway 33. Castanet will update this story as more information becomes available.
