A football fan is in a "serious but stable condition" in hospital after taking ill in the stands ahead of a match in Newport . On Saturday afternoon, two air ambulances landed at Rodney Parade ahead of Newport County AFC's League Two match fixture against Notts County League due to the medical emergency. A spokesperson for Newport County confirmed that the air ambulance had landed on the pitch "due to a supporter being taken ill in the stands". The grounds were evacuated, with the match starting an hour later than scheduled at 4pm after the fan was taken to hospital. It happened less than an hour before the opening League Two game of the season. A spokesperson for Wales Air Ambulance confirmed they were called to the scene. In their statement, they said: "I can confirm that two Wales Air Ambulance crews attended a medical emergency at Rodney Parade in Newport this afternoon (02/08/25), the first arriving on scene 2:22pm." On X, the club further confirmed that the supporter was in a "serious but stable condition" and remained in hospital. Their post on the social media platform read: "A Notts fan who was taken ill before today's game is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate and we continue to send our thoughts and best wishes to the supporter and their family." Notts County manager Mark Paterson had earlier confirmed the spectator taken ill was a Magpies supporter. "We wish him and his family all the best and it just puts things into perspective," Paterson told BBC Radio Nottingham. "We as a football club, me and my staff and players were willing to wait as long as we possibly had to, to make sure that the supporter was taken care of and he got what he needed." The match concluded at around 5.37pm, with both teams scoring a goal each. Fans on both sides wished the supporter well in their recovery, with Newport County, Notts County FC and rugby team Dragons RFC, whose home stadium is Rodney Parade, all sending heartfelt messages to the individual and their family. Newport manager David Hughes, who was in charge for his first League Two game, said everyone's thoughts were with the supporter who had been taken ill. "He and his family are in everybody's thinking," Hughes said after the game.
