Foreign Office warns UK tourists face 'breathalyser tests' under new 'rules'

UK tourists have been warned they face "breathalysers" while abroad if they're heading out onto the road with hire cars. The Foreign Office, or FCDO, took to Twitter, now X, to discuss what lies ahead for Brits as we head into the spring and summer months. In a new post on X, formerly Twitter, FCDO said on Monday: "Got a road trip planned this Easter? Check the local rules – some countries require breathalysers, spare glasses, or vignettes for toll roads. "Fines aren't a fun souvenir. Remember, check Gov UK before you go." The RAC warns European Union holidaymakers how important documents for travelling in Europe include a full, valid driving licence and national insurance number, proof of vehicle insurance, and proof of ID (passport). READ MORE All the dates in April UK faces snow as 23C temperatures drop massively Other items include V5C certificate (the 'log book'), travel insurance documents, European Breakdown Cover policy number and documents, and before you travel ensure your vehicle’s tax and MOT are valid and up-to-date. Remember a Crit’air sticker if driving in France, too, and you may also need to carry other documents with you, namely one or more international driving permits or a UK sticker (if you don’t have a UK identifier with the Union flag on your number plate). Required equipment for driving in Europe include r eflective jackets (there must be one for each passenger and be kept within the cabin of the car), a w arning triangle (compulsory in most countries) and h eadlamp beam deflectors (depending on your car, you’ll either need deflector stickers or have to adjust the beam manually). Safety helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers of motorcyclists and moped users. Remember a UK car sticker (if you don’t have a GB Euro number plate, or no matter what's on you number plate when driving in Cyprus, Malta or Spain) and f irst aid kit (compulsory in Austria, France and Germany) too. The RAC says r ecommended things to take with you for Driving in Europe include a ire extinguisher, replacement bulbs, high quality torch, spare fuel can, additional engine oil and water (for topping up), up-to-date road map or satellite navigation system and blankets. Sun cream, refreshments and plenty of water and if you have children, take some games you can play in the car during the journey, are essential. Take extra supplies of medication in case you can’t get these abroad. Remember photocopies of important documents and a European Health Insurance card too.
