Karenna Groff, who was named the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2022, died in the plane crash Saturday, according to the Associated Press, USA Today, and Boston.com. Groff’s parents Dr. Michael Groff and Dr. Joy Saini, and her brother Jared died in the crash, according to the outlets. Groff’s partner James Santoro and her brother Jared’s partner Alexia Couyutas Duarte died in the crash, as well. The pilot of the plane has also died, according to the AP. PEOPLE previously reported that the plane carrying the Groff family crashed into a field in upstate New York near the town of Copake around 12:15 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “They were a wonderful family,” James’ father, John Santoro, told the AP. “The world lost a lot of very good people who were going to do a lot of good for the world if they had the opportunity. We’re all personally devastated.” Santoro told NBC Boston that his son was joining the Groff family on the trip to celebrate her 25th birthday, on April 12. The AP reported that the crash occurred shortly after the pilot had radioed to air traffic control requesting a new landing plan after missing the plane’s initial approach to Columbia County Airport. Air traffic controllers tried to warn the pilot three times that the plane was flying in a low altitude but did not receive a response, the outlet reported. The pilot also made no distress call to air traffic control, according to the AP. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office have not immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment on April 13. Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore told reporters outside the scene that authorities "estimate the investigation will take a couple of days,” according to local News 10. Groff was enrolled in medical school at New York University after graduating from MIT, where she first met her boyfriend James, a former MIT lacrosse player, according to ESPN. Groff was a two-sport athlete, playing soccer and basketball throughout her high school and college athletic career. She finished her MIT career ranked second all-time in career goals and points (assists and goals), while twice being nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 2021 and 2022. Groff excelled off the field as well, majoring in biological engineering, working as a research assistant at Boston Children’s Hospital and working as an EMT with MIT’s emergency services. The Weston, Mass. native was honored as the 2022 Woman of the Year, which “recognizes graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in athletics, academics, leadership and community service,” according to the NCAA. Groff said at the time she was “incredibly grateful to be recognized” with the award, which came one year after she helped design masks for essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the AP."Being a student-athlete has allowed me to learn so much about leadership that I never would have gotten the chance to learn otherwise,” she said at the time. “I think you learn so much about yourself and your leadership style and also other people's leadership styles and what works for you. Having that knowledge, that practice and experience allows you to feel confident to serve as a leader in the classroom, in other activities and walks of life. I honestly don't know what kind of person I would be if I wasn't exposed to that and didn't have that opportunity through soccer."
