Former mixed martial arts athlete Ben Askren has received a double lung transplant just weeks after he was hospitalized with "severe pneumonia," his wife said.
In an update shared on Facebook, Amy Askren said she and her family are "so thankful to share that Ben has received a double lung transplant" on Monday, June 30.
"We are forever thankful to the donor and his family," said Amy, who has been sharing updates on her husband's health since he was admitted to the hospital on June 7 after being "unable to respond" due to pneumonia.
"This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift," she continued, writing that it "still doesn't feel real" that her husband, a former Olympic wrestler, boxer and mixed martial artist, was "walking around completely healthy just 5 weeks ago," in the newest post.
"So much can change so quickly," she reflected. "Please keep Ben in your prayers that his body welcomes the new lungs as if they were his own," Amy wrote, adding that she's "constantly in awe of all the people carrying us through right now."
"I can’t wait to tell Ben all about It," Amy said. "I’m hopeful that in coming weeks Ben will be able to give the next update, but hopefully he will wait until the drugs wear off."
Also in her post, Amy shared a photo of the wall in her husband's hospital room covered with loving drawings and letters from family and friends. One piece of paper hung on the wall says, "You have new lungs," with hearts drawn around it. Elsewhere, pictures of Askren and his children are seen taped to the wall.
Amy first announced her husband was on the transplant list on June 24 in a separate post on Facebook. She asked her friends and supporters to "please pray he can get stronger and stay stable without complications while he waits."
Amy also asked for prayers for the donor's family, "whoever that donor may be."

As of June 24, Askren was still unable to look at his phone and respond to messages, his wife said, but she was hoping he could "get there in the next week or two," and respond to family and friends who have reached out amid the health scare.
Askren is a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner who won titles in the ONE Championship and Bellator. He also competed in the 2008 Olympics.
In 2019, he announced his retirement from the UFC after just three fights, citing "hip issues," according to ESPN. He completed his UFC career with just three fights and a 1-2 record.
