Freddie Flintoff's harrowing car accident while filming for Top Gear has been revealed in the first footage released within a trailer for an upcoming revelatory documentary on his life. The programme, titled 'Flintoff', will feature a 90-minute in-depth account and shows Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff reflecting on the vivid recollections of the crash that left him severely injured and fortunate to survive. The preview material from the Disney+ exclusive shows emergency services attending to Flintoff at the roadside, with tyre marks evidencing the three-wheeler's disastrous veer off course. In a poignant moment from the teaser, Flintoff shares: "I remember everything about it. It's so vivid. This is what I'm left with... I wouldn't say I'm embracing them but I'm not trying to hide my scars." Discussing his motivation for opening up through this documentary, he explains his need for setting the record straight after months of retreat and rampant speculation: "I'd lived under the radar for seven months, one of the real frustrations was the speculation, that's why I'm doing this now. What actually happened?". He also touches on his transformation from a reserved young boy to becoming a public figure through his cricketing triumphs: "I was a shy kid growing up, they start calling me Fred and then I found this alter-ego.", reports the Mirror . Freddie describes his evolution into a 'commodity' and how his life took an entirely new direction following the near-fatal incident. The incident that reshaped Flintoff's life occurred in December 2022, involving a catastrophic flip at high velocity whilst at the helm of an open-top Morgan Super 3 during a Top Gear challenge. The presenter suffered broken ribs and severe facial injuries while filming a stunt for the BBC show. Flintoff's son, Corey, revealed at the time that his father was "lucky to be alive". Freddie previously shared that he was "crying every two minutes" for weeks following the terrifying crash, as well as experiencing flashbacks and nightmares about the near-death incident when he tried to sleep. Former presenter Chris Harris expressed that he had voiced concerns about the stunt before Freddie got in the car. Speaking about Flintoff's accident, Harris said: "He wasn't wearing a crash helmet. And if you do that, even at 25, 30 miles an hour, the injuries that you sustain are profound." Harris explained that the crash occurred while Flintoff was driving a three-wheeled supercar. "It's a very difficult car," he said. "You have to be aware of its limitations. "And I think that really was difficult, and you need experience. There were two people that had driven a Morgan three-wheeler before present that day - me and someone else, a pro driver. "And we were sitting inside at that time. No one had asked us anything about the car. They'd just gone on and shot it without us." Harris arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. He said: "I remember the radio message that I heard. I heard someone say this has been a real accident here. The car's upside down. So I ran to the window, looked out and he wasn't moving." The accident wasn't the first for Flintoff since he started hosting the show. The father-of-four had a mishap in February 2019 when he crashed into a market stall in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. In September of the same year, he was involved in another crash during a drag race while filming at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire, but he emerged unscathed. In June 2022, Flintoff experienced a bobsleigh accident in Norway, where the vehicle flipped over, but he again walked away without injury. James Corden also appears in the new Disney documentary alongside Freddie's wife, who reveals in the trailer that her life was forever changed after the crash. During his BBC series, A Field Of Dreams, an emotional Freddie confessed that he "should not be here" following his horrific Top Gear crash that left him with severe injuries and crippling anxiety, confining him to his home for months. Reflecting on the December 2022 accident, Freddie shared how he was "crying every two minutes" for weeks afterwards, plagued by flashbacks and nightmares of the near-death experience. The former cricketer revisits this painful period in a new TV documentary, which includes a video he filmed at home when his facial injuries were at their most severe, showing him visibly scarred and still on edge. With a tremble in his voice, Freddie opened up to the camera: "Week and a half after my accident. "Genuinely should not be here after what happened. This is going to be a long road back and I have only just started and I am struggling already. I need help. I really am not the best at asking for it. I need to stop crying every two minutes." He secured a compensation from the BBC last year, rumoured to be around £9m. Notably, the payment was not covered by the TV licence fee, as it came from BBC Studios which operates under its own commercial terms. Flintoff became a presenter on BBC One's Top Gear in 2019, joining forces with Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris. However, the show has been cancelled in the wake of his accident. In March 2023, the BBC extended an apology to Flintoff, stating: "We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. "Acknowledging the show's suspension, they expressed their understanding of potential disappointment among fans, assuring: "We understand this [halting the show] will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we'll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year. " The show has yet to make a comeback. Prior to his television fame, Flintoff hung up his cricket gear in 2009 after an illustrious sporting career, having represented England in 79 Tests, 141 one-day internationals, and seven T20s, playing an instrumental role in England clinching the Ashes in 2005 and 2009.
