Freshman’s big day powers Mona Shores golf to sixth straight GMAA city title

MUSKEGON, MI – There was no hesitation for Mona Shores freshman golfer Cruz Beckstrom on Monday as he competed at the 2025 Greater Muskegon Athletic Association city tournament at the Muskegon Country Club.
The young golfer for the Sailors calmly put together a 3-over-par 75 performance on his home course during a cold and windy April day to take home individual medalist honors and power Mona Shores to its sixth straight GMAA city championship as a team.
The Sailors finished with a 315 team score and dominated the individual leaderboard with Eddie Kuznar finishing runner-up with a 79, while Gavin Olson carded an 80 to finish third and Brady Volkmann finished with an 81 to finish sixth overall.
“Anytime you can get your lineup to finish 1, 2, 3 and 6 in the final standings, that’s an incredible achievement,” said Mona Shores head coach Scott Volkmann. “You’re really only as good as a team as your third and fourth golfers and I thought Gavin shooting an 80 and Brady finishing with an 81 was big for our team. Eddie breaking 80 was a big lift for his confidence moving forward and I think his best golf is still in front of him.
“The conditions were tough with it being cold and windy but I was really happy with how the guys competed,” said Mona Shores head coach Scott Volkmann. “Obviously, we have an advantage with the event being at our home course and I think that helped us play with confidence.”
Volkmann had high praise for Beckstrom following Monday’s event, as the freshman standout continues to showcase why he’s one of the rising stars in the West Michigan area this spring.
“That’s not by accident,” said Volkman of his freshman golfer. “He’s a really good player. He puts in a ton of time. He plays a lot of summer events. We went over to Detroit Catholic for two days in March just to show our guys what the top programs in the state look like and get out some of the early season nerves. Cruz really performed well there and I don’t think he was phased at all (on Monday) because he has had so many competitive reps in the summer.
“He’s one of the most polished young golfers I’ve ever coached. I usually don’t coach the younger golfers until later on in their careers but as far as comparisons go, I think he reminds me a lot of Reed Hrynewich, who had a great senior year and went on to play at Michigan. They have some similarities as far as work ethic and just putting in the amount of time to be successful.”
Kristian Brown of Reeths-Puffer finished fourth overall in the individual standings with an 80, while Cayden Caniff of Ravenna took fifth with an 80, and Isaac Utzinger of Oakridge finished seventh with an 82. Kaeden Benner of Reeths-Puffer (82) finished eighth, Aiden Waggoner of Reeth-Puffer (83) as ninth and Chase Sullivan of Fruitport rounded out the Top 10 with an 83.
Fruitport finished runner-up in the team standings with a 339, while Reeths-Puffer finished third overall with a 361. Ravenna (361) finished fourth, Western Michigan Christian (362) came in fifth place, Whitehall (372) finished sixth overall, North Muskegon (382) came in seventh, Oakridge (400) was slotted eighth, Montague (404) came in ninth, Holton (459) was 10th overall, and Orchard View (535) rounded out the top team scores in 11th place.
Muskegon Catholic finished with a 362, but did not qualify with just three golfers.
Mona Shores will host an O-K Green jamboree on Wednesday at the Muskegon Country Club, followed by the annual Corporal B Invitational at American Dunes on Friday.
