From Hardik Pandya To Axar Patel: Full List Of Captains For IPL 2025

Delhi Capitals on Friday announced their captain for IPL 2025 after a long wait, bringing in Axar Patel as their leader for the 18th edition of the cash-rich league, as the franchise chases the elusive title.
Axar, 31, has been with the Delhi Capitals for the last six years and was retained for a whopping Rs 16.5 crore.
While Axar’s IPL leadership experience is limited, he led Gujarat in domestic cricket and served as India’s T20I vice-captain earlier this year.
With all the captains now officially announced, we take a look at the full list of skippers who will lead their team in IPL 2025:
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad
Gaikwad was named the skipper of the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2024, taking over from former India captain MS Dhoni on March 21. Under him, Chennai finished fifth with seven wins in 14 games.
Delhi Capitals: Axar Patel
Axar Patel was appointed skipper of the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025, replacing Rishabh Pant, who exited the team before the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Under the latter, Delhi finished sixth with seven wins in 14 matches.
Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill was named the skipper of the Gujarat Titans for IPL 2024 after Hardik Pandya’s move to the Mumbai Indians, with the announcement made in November 2023. Under Gill, Gujarat finished eighth with just five wins in 14 games, and his captaincy will be under scrutiny this year.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Ajinkya Rahane
Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders appointed Ajinkya Rahane as their skipper for IPL 2025. Venkatesh Iyer was named his deputy, and Rahane will have a legacy to carry forward.
Lucknow Super Giants: Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant was announced as the skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025 in January this year after his record-breaking purchase of a whopping Rs 27 crore. Under the previous captain, KL Rahul, LSG finished seventh in IPL 2024, with seven wins in 14 matches.
Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya was named the skipper of five-time champions Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024, replacing India captain Rohit Sharma in December 2023. Under Pandya, MI finished last in the season, and he will have a task at hand in IPL 2025.
Punjab Kings: Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer was named the skipper of the Punjab Kings for IPL 2025 in January this year after his purchase for Rs 26.75 crore in the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Under the previous captains Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran, Punjab finished ninth in IPL 2024, with just five wins in 14 games.
Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson was named the skipper of the Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2021. Under him, the team finished a creditable third in IPL 2024, with eight wins in 14 matches and lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Qualifier 2.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Rajat Patidar
Rajat Patidar was announced as the new skipper of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for IPL 2025 last month. Under the previous captain, Faf du Plessis, the team finished fourth in IPL 2024, winning seven of their 14 games but losing to Rajasthan in the Eliminator.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins was named the skipper of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in March 2024, replacing Aiden Markram, who led the side in the 2023 season. Under him, Hyderabad finished as runners-up in IPL 2024.
