OpenAI has recently enhanced ChatGPT-4 with an exciting new feature called Image Generation. Using this feature, users have the ability to recreate photos into the magical animation style of Studio Ghibli films. Social media is filled with people sharing adorable, wide-eyed selfies and turning memorable pictures of their pets, friends and families into the iconic style of Hayao Miyazaki’s films. After seeing various users experimenting with the feature, celebrities and brands are now joining the trend, who are amazed by how easily this technology brings their photos to life in a unique and creative way.
Famous figures like Sachin Tendulkar, Devendra Fadnavis and Paytm’s founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma have transformed their photos into Studio Ghibli style art. On the other hand, big brands like Airbus and India Post also made creative use of the technology. That’s not all, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions reimagined their beloved characters from films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, OK Jaanu, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Shershaah and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in Ghibli’s signature animation style.

Hayao Miyazaki, the Oscar winning director behind Studio Ghibli classics like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and The Boy and the Heron, has never been a fan of AI generated content. Long before AI tools became a trending thing, he strongly criticised it and called it “an insult to life itself.”
In a clip circulating on the internet, Miyazaki could be heard saying, “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”
Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is currently trending on Twitter X for his reaction to seeing an AI-generated animation in 2016:

ChatGPT explains that while AI image generators can create beautiful scenes, they often struggle with basic visuals that people regularly use for communication. However, the new GPT-4o image generation is much better at handling these tasks. It can create images with a lot of detail and accuracy by following instructions and use its built in knowledge to improve results. It can also modify uploaded pictures or use them as inspiration to create new visuals.
