Delhi Police Crime Branch on Sunday arrested notorious serial killer Ajay Lamba alias Bansi, who was known for his brutal robbery-cum-murder cases targeting cab drivers across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during the year 2001. Bansi would hire taxis for interstate travel, sedate and murder the driver, dump his body and then pawn the vehicle to Nepal. He is said to be involved in at least four such killings, but the police suspect the count could be more. He had been absconding for the last 25 years. "The accused, a notorious robber-cum-murderer, was involved in four brutal robbery-cum-murder cases targeting cab drivers across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during the year 2001. He would hire taxis with accomplices, murder the drivers, rob the vehicles, and dispose of the bodies in remote mountainous regions to avoid detection," Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said in a statement, The Times of India reported. The cab would then be smuggled across the border and sold in Nepal. In 1996, he changed his name and moved to Bareilly, according to the report. Police say Lamba lived in Nepal from 2008 to 2018 before settling in Dehradun with his family and suspect that he and his gang members could be involved in more killings. Of the four victims, only one cab driver's body was recovered. Lamba has several other cases against him, ranging from theft to illegal possession of arms, police have said. After tracking him for years, he was caught because of his trail in subsequent cases after he became a ganja supplier in 2020, and then robbed a jewellery store in Odisha.
