Fryer: OC track and field championships will put spotlight on stars
@Source: ocregister.com
The Orange County Track and Field Championships are Saturday at Mission Viejo High School.
One of the big attractions for the meet could be Los Alamitos senior Devin Bragg.
Bragg is Orange County’s premier returning boys sprinter. He was last season’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion in the 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 10.38 seconds and in the 200 at 21.15, also wind-aided. Bragg finished sixth in the 100 and eighth in the 200 at the CIF State Championships.
He has competed only once this season, at the Long Beach Poly Trackrabbit Invitational on Feb. 22. Bragg won the 100 (10.57) and was fifth in the 200 (22.56).
Bragg has been sidelined by what he called “a little thing.” He declined to include specifics.
“”I’m trying to stay healthy,” Bragg said Thursday. “Trying to stay consistent, get my times lower, hopefully PR (establish personal records).”
His personal bests are a wind-aided 21.04 in the 200 last season and a wind-aided 10.35 in the 100 as a freshman in the CIF-SS finals. That 100 time was an attention-grabber.
Definitely not competing Saturday at Mission Viejo are the top boys and girls distance runners, Holly Barker of Trabuco Hills and Evan Noonan of Dana Hills. They were the Orange County cross country athletes of the year this past autumn and have had plenty of track and field success, too.
Barker said she will run in The Ten on Saturday at JSerra High. Noonan is gearing up for the Stanford Invitational on April 5.
Servite’s sensational set of sprinters will compete in the Texas Relays in Austin this weekend. The Friars’ 4×100 relay team ran a county-record 40.24 seconds last week in a league meet at St. John Bosco High.
Still, the meet will have plenty to offer.
Aliso Niguel thrower Jaslene Massey is listed in the meet program for the shot put and discus. She seems to set personal records and achieve standout marks in county history with every passing meet.
Massey threw the shot put a personal-best 49 feet, 4 inches in the Beach Cities meet last week. That’s the third-best mark in Orange County history.
Her distance of 155 feet, 9 inches in the Beach Cities meet last week is a personal best and the ninth-best mark in county history.
Mater Dei senior Brandon Gorski is entered in the high jump and long jump. His clearance of 6 feet, 8 inches is the best in Orange County this season. Gorski’s long jump of 23 feet, 8 inches is the second-best mark in the county in 2025.
The O.C. long jump leader is Santa Margarita senior Leo Francis, who has a mark of 23-8.25 this season. Francis is also adept in the sprints and the 300 hurdles, and can be a one-man points-gathering machine for Santa Margarita’s team scoring.
Newport Harbor junior Natalie McCarty competed last week in the Beach Cities Invitational, and she finished first in the 100 hurdles (15.21), 300 hurdles (44.49) and high jump (5-2). She is entered in Saturday’s two hurdles events.
Admission to the Orange County Championships is $12 for adults, $8 for children and $2 for children under 5 years of age. Have cash hand, just in case. Parking is free and open spaces will be sparse throughout the day.
As of Thursday afternoon, Bragg was still weighing the pros and cons of competing in the Orange County Championships. If he doesn’t run Saturday, the Arcadia Invitational on April 12 at Arcadia High would be a opportunity for him in addition to the dual meets before the CIF-SS prelims May 10.
“I’m trying to come back from this little break,” he said, “and be better than I’ve ever been.”
