Actor Stephen Graham is looking back at the time he nearly broke his Gangs of New York costar Leonardo DiCaprio’s leg.
During a visit to The Tonight Show on Wednesday, the Adolescence star admitted that he almost derailed production on Martin Scorsese’s 2002 historical drama after he accidentally tipped over a golf cart that contained him, DiCaprio, and Alec McCowen while speeding around set one day.
"Leo used to drive a golf cart. You know, the way they drive golf carts on big sets and stuff. So I asked him for a go. I said, 'Can I have a go on the golf cart?'" Graham recalled to host Jimmy Fallon. "And he was like, ‘Uh... yeah, okay.’”

The English actor explained that he proceeded to take himself, DiCaprio, and McCowen on a little joy ride around Rome’s Cinecittà Studios where they were filming at the time, but the trouble began brewing when he approached a big hill on the lot.
“Golf carts aren't that fast, are they? But going downhill, they are," Graham pointed out. "I floored it… We were like the Flintstones, basically.”
To stop their rapid descent, the 51-year-old tried to put the golf cart into reverse to slow them down but only ended up making the situation much, much worse. "You know how when you knock a golf cart into reverse and it takes its time? Well, if you knock it into reverse when you're going quite fast, the back wheels lock,” Graham said. “So as the back wheels lock, I've turned it Jim, and as I've turned it, the whole thing's just started to fall.”
The entire experience felt like it was happening in slow motion. “So it's falling really slowly, and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute,’ and [DiCaprio's] looking at me and he's going, 'What the f---?’” he said. "And the next minute, as it's falling, it looks like it's gonna break his leg."
Thankfully, DiCaprio managed to get out of the way just in time and avoid getting grievously injured by their falling golf cart. Still, Graham said that his passengers weren't particularly happy with his driving skills. "Alec, who's a lovely lad… He goes, ‘You're an animal!’” Graham recalled. "And so my nickname became Ani after that. They called me Animal.”
When Fallon warned Graham to be more careful in the future, the actor added, "I know, I know! We would’ve had to stop filming."
Set in 1863, Gangs of New York follows “Amsterdam” Vallon (DiCaprio), a young man who infiltrates an Anglo-Protestant gang to get revenge on its leader “Bill the Butcher” (Daniel Day-Lewis) for the murder of his father. When things go awry, an all-out gang war begins to unfold amid the backdrop of the ongoing American Civil War.
The film, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, also starred Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, and Stephen Graham as Shang.
