Gareth Anscombe suffers fresh injury blow with future up in the air

Wales international Gareth Anscombe has been dealt a fresh injury blow, having been sidelined with a hamstring issue. The fly-half featured in three Six Nations matches after being recalled to the Welsh squad by interim boss Matt Sherratt but has not trained with Gloucester since returning to the club after the end of the tournament. While the extent of the injury has not been confirmed, it is a real setback to his season, with the 33-year-old set to depart Kingsholm this summer. Confirming the news, Gloucester's director of rugby George Skivington said: "[Anscombe] is injured. He is out injured with a hamstring. He hasn’t trained with us since being away with Wales.” It is the latest in a string of injury setbacks for Anscombe, who was most recently sidelined for three weeks after hurting his knee in January. He joined Gloucester at the start of the season after recovering from a long-term groin injury sustained during the 2023 Rugby World Cup which wrecked his dream move to Japan, while he previously spent two years on the sidelines after suffering a brutal knee injury against England in 2019. With six weeks of the regular season remaining, it is unclear whether we will see Anscombe in action for the Gallagher Premiership side again. The 42-cap international has impressed for Skivington's side over the course of the campaign, forming a strong half-back partnership with fellow Wales star Tomos Williams. But with fly-half Ross Byrne moving to Kingsholm from Leinster on a long-term deal ahead of next season, he looks set to move on to pastures new and hopes to have his future decided in the coming weeks. Two sides are reportedly interested in securing Anscombe's services, with Leicester Tigers and ProD2 side Provence said to be in the hunt. Provence already count Anscombe's fellow Welsh internationals George North and Tomas Francis amongst their players and have reportedly offered the fly-half a deal of just over £10,000 a month to make the move across the English Channel. However, the Tigers are also keen in securing his signature as a replacement for outgoing Springbok fly-half Handre Pollard, having also targeted Welsh outside-halves Sam Costelow and Sam Davies to fill the role. What's clear, however, is that, despite his injury troubles, Anscombe has no intention of hanging up his boots anytime soon. After leaving him out of his Six Nations squad, Warren Gatland questioned whether the fly-half would make it to the next World Cup in 2027 - but the man himself hit back at those suggestions and said making it to the tournament was a "focus" for him. "I would love to keep playing to the World Cup," he said. "I certainly don't have a time limit in my head. I've missed a large majority of games with injury and I'm hoping they'll buy me some legs in the back end of my career. "I've played most of the games for Gloucester, I've barely missed a game or training, I want to keep playing. Look, those comments were Gats' opinion and I certainly want to keep playing and a World Cup is certainly a focus."
