Gary Jozwiak, legendary Midland High football coach, dies at 86

Gary Jozwiak, one of the top football coaches in Saginaw Valley League history, died Saturday, Feb. 8, in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Jozwiak graduated from Midland High in 1957 and returned to teach and coach at his alma mater after a college football career as a running back for the Wyoming Cowboys. MORE: Gary Jozwiak obituary He joined the Midland High faculty and coaching staff in 1964, teaching math while coaching track and junior varsity baseball. He also served as an assistant varsity football coach under Bob Stoppert, eventually taking over as the varsity head coach. Jozwiak coached the varsity for 24 years before retiring in 1998 with a 178-59 record that included 10 Saginaw Valley League titles, three regional championships and two state final appearances. He also coached track for 31 years with a 192-28-2 record with eight league titles and four regional championships. Jozwiak is a member of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame. He was also included in the first group of Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Week honorees. A celebration of life is planned for later this year in Midland.
