Gary Neville Identifies Five Positions Lacking Quality at Man Utd

Gary Neville has insisted Manchester United need at least five signings this summer to build a squad better suited to Ruben Amorim’s style of play.
The Red Devils legend was among those left feeling less than impressed by United’s 0-0 stalemate with Manchester City on Sunday, which Amorim indicated lacked significant stakes for motivation.
During Sky Sports‘ post-match analysis, Neville slightly eased his criticism and backed Amorim’s shift towards a more defensive approach, acknowledging that the manager doesn’t have the right players to effectively implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation.
“From a United standpoint, I understand why he’s opted for a low block,” Neville stated. “This is reminiscent of the strategies used by Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Erik ten Hag. Each aimed to play high-press, high-energy football but eventually resorted to a low block in crucial matches.
“I do understand why Ruben Amorim’s done that today, with the players he’s got, because he hasn’t got the players to adapt. They need five new players straight away before you even think about the rest of it.
“The three up front are not good enough and the two wing-backs, they’re not good enough. They need five players. They need to serve him with five players who are good enough in this system to be able to play his system the way he wants.”
Striker Rasmus Hojlund managed just 15 touches before being hooked after 70 minutes, while winger Alejandro Garnacho also struggled. Bruno Fernandes started alongside the pair in attack and, while impressive individually, appears better suited to a deeper role in the side.
At wing-back, January signing Patrick Dorgu was recruited specifically for Amorim’s system but has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford, while plans are already being put in place to upgrade on Diogo Dalot on the right side of defence.
Ahead of the game, Amorim acknowledged his desire to sign one or two “big players” to help get his squad trending in the right direction again.
“When I say ‘big players’ I’m not saying from Real Madrid, it’s big players in the way I see the game,” the United boss explained.
