Gary Woodland Tumor Still Exists, Works to Keep Brain From Shutting Down
@Source: newsweek.com
Gary Woodland tied for second at the Texas Children's Houston Open, his best finish on the PGA Tour since winning the 2019 U.S. Open. The result is even more impressive considering he underwent brain surgery just over a year ago.But just because he's back on the tour and coming off a result like the one at Memorial Park doesn't mean he's in full remission from the tumor that landed him in the operating room.From the venue of the Valero Texas Open, where he is playing this week, Woodland spoke of the remnants he still faces as a brain tumor patient."My brain's different, it is," Woodland said. "I'm still recovering, I'm still healing. I don't have the luxury to think ahead because if I do, if I even think to the past, my brain's going to shut down.""I have fatigue. Yesterday I wasn't feeling good and I had to -- I told my caddie I've got to get out of here. Monday, he forced me to take off. He's been around and he's seen when I get fatigued, I really can't control my brain. So thinking ahead doesn't really do me any good."Woodland also made startling revelations about the current state of his brain."I think the biggest hurdle for me is accepting where I'm at. The fact is I'm different than I was a couple years ago, I am. I've had an operation on my brain, I have scar tissue in there now, I still have part of the tumor in there."Gary Woodland was unwell for several months before a brain tumor was discovered. This led to him undergoing surgery in September 2023, which was successfully completed.His recovery was nothing short of miraculous, as he was fit enough to return to the PGA Tour just four months later. He played the entire 2024 season (26 tournaments) and his results were good considering his condition, making 15 cuts, one top 10 and two other top 25s.These results earned him the PGA Tour's Courage Award earlier this season.He has fared a little better in 2025, making five cuts in eight tournaments, with four top-25s, including his runner-up finish at the Houston Open. It is worth noting his course-record tying final round of 62 at Memorial Park.Woodland still does not qualify for next week's Masters Tournament, but a win at the Valero Texas Open would punch his ticket. Otherwise, he will miss the Augusta National event for the first time since 2017.More Golf: CBS' Complete Masters Coverage Revealed with a New Wrinkle Fans Will Love
