Gautam Gambhir Brutally Slammed For Leaving Out Shreyas Iyer From Asia Cup Squad: 'Only Backs Players He Like'

Shreyas Iyer's snub from the Asia Cup squad drew heavy criticism. Iyer is having a dream run with the bat and scored over 600 runs in the IPL, but was still ignored for the Asia Cup, leaving many baffled. Former India cricketer Sadagoppan Ramesh minced no words while slamming coach Gautam Gambhir for the move. Ramesh alleged that Gambhir selects the players he likes while completely letting go of those who don't make his list. Ramesh was clear in his stance that Shreyas Iyer should have been picked in the Asia Cup squad. "He backs the players he likes but completely lets go of those he doesn't," said Ramesh on his YouTube channel. "Shreyas Iyer produced incredible performances in the same UAE in the Champions Trophy and should be a permanent fixture in India's white-ball teams. Players need to be backed when they are high on confidence and in form and not when they fade away and lack confidence. This is the ideal time to reap the rewards of Iyer's sky-high confidence and form," he added. Gambhir's Coaching Tenure A Topsy-Turvy RideGambhir took over as India coach after the T20 World Cup 2024 and has since delivered tremendous results in white ball cricket, which also includes a win in the ICC Champions Trophy. However, he has tasted mixed results in test matches, with the only series win under him coming against Bangladesh. The team suffered a defeat to New Zealand at home and lost to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which raised serious questions about Gambhir's credentials as a coach, but the team bounced back in England, drawing the series 2-2. Ramesh said that the series draw in England looks a great achievement because India hasn't won anything in Tests under Gambhir. "The drawn series in England looks like a great achievement only because we performed poorly in Test cricket over the past year. Because winning consistently abroad had started long back under Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri. But now, just the drawn series in England gets looked at as a big achievement in Gambhir's track record," added Sadagoppan Ramesh.
