Gautam Gambhir To Travel England With India A Team Ahead Of Five-Match Test Series: Report

Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir is all set to travel to England with the India A team in June as part of preparations ahead of India’s five-match series against the English team. India will face England in five Tests from June 20 to August 4. Ahead of the much-awaited series, the India A team will travel to England, and Gambhir has decided to travel with them.
According to a report in Times of India on Wednesday, “Gambhir has been in discussions with the BCCI since he returned from Australia. He has expressed his desire to travel with the India ‘A’ team to get a clearer view of the reserve pool,” a BCCI source said.
“With India winning the Champions Trophy after Gambhir’s insistence for certain wild card players, one may expect him to assert more in the future,” the source added.
Gambhir, who succeeded Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach in July 2025, has only been able to win three out of 10 Tests played so far as head coach.
It has been reported that Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and NCA head VVS Laxman are in discussions on possible ways of reviving India’s pool of players for Test cricket.
“One of the crucial issues identified is reviving India ‘A’ tours. There have been only a handful of ‘A’ series after Dravid left NCA, and all of those were shadow tours for a marquee series. Gambhir too believes that there needs to be more ‘A’ tours. That’s why he wants to take stock of the situation firsthand,” the source said.
During the A tour, Indian team management is likely to try to use the resource pool, and a few senior players could also be asked to play in the ‘A’ series in England. Gambhir is also expected to take stock of the senior players’ form and identify possible backups.
