Gavin & Stacey star says 'it's time' as they offer to take on Doctor Who role

Amid swirling rumours that Ncuti Gatwa could be set to leave the Tardis after his second season, one Gavin & Stacey star has put their name forward to take up the iconic role. This week, the BBC have been forced to shut down reports that the long-running show was being axed.
However, The Sun have reported that the Ncuti has already filmed his regeneration exit scene for the end of series two. The 32-year-old Scottish Rwandan actor joined the programme in 2023, but is reportedly looking to head to Los Angeles for a number of other acting projects. A decision on series 3 of Ncuti's tenor is set to be made with Disney+ after series 2 airs.
Now there could potentially be a vacancy in the Tardis, Gavin & Stacey's Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason, has told Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies it is time for a Welsh Doctor. The Swansea-born screenwriter was the showrunner of Doctor Who from its 2005 revival until 2010, before re-joining the show in 2023.
Posting a photo of a blue telephone box to his Instagram, Robert said: "As new Dr Who rumours circulate I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. If you're listening Russell, it's time for a Welsh doctor."
Commenters rushed to support Robert's idea. One person said, "Totally up for that." Another added: "I can only imagine this being a phenomenal casting." James Corden himself even liked the post.
The BBC hasn't officially confirmed a release date for Ncuti's second series as the Doctor, but new episodes of the sci-fi show are expected to air in May 2025. A spokesperson for Doctor Who said earlier this week: "Doctor Who has not been shelved. As we have previously stated, the decision on season three will be made after season two airs.
"The deal with Disney Plus was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines."
We recently saw Rob back as Jason West in the Barry-set comedy as it reached its final conclusion at Christmas.
