George Foreman, the boxing legend, has died at the age of 76. Foreman’s peers swiftly took to social media to honor the heavy-handed puncher and owner of the world’s most revered smile on Friday night. “Condolences to George Foreman’s family,” wrote Mike Tyson, the fellow heavyweight great, on X. “His contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten.” “Rest in peace, George Foreman. Your legacy lives on, champ,” wrote six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen. Foreman’s family released a statement on his official Instagram page on Friday, accompanied by a photo of Foreman surrounded by his large family, relaying the sad news: Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose. A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own. A two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist, “Big George” won 76 of his 81 fights — 68 via knockout. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003. Foreman is also the face of the “George Foreman Grill” — a popular indoor electric grill characterized by its non-stick surfaces and angled plates that allow excess fat to drain into a removable tray. His cause of death is unclear at this time. “Rest in Peace to the LEGENDARY George Foreman who passed away at 76. More than just a boxing World Heavyweight Champ, Olympic Gold Medalist and George Foreman Grill maker. He was a Man of God, a Preacher and the embodiment of Power. Prayers up for Big George and his family,” wrote Robert Griffin III. Todderick Hunt covers Sports and Culture. Do you have a story idea or a tip? He can be reached at thunt@njadvancemedia.com.
