Gethin Jones takes on new sporting role in move away from BBC Morning Live

If you are no stranger to BBC's daytime show Morning Live, you'll know of it's presenter Gethin Jones. The Welshman has been a regular face on our tellies for decades, however in his spare time he has a different love. Gethin hasn't been afraid to share his passion for physical activities, whether that is Welsh rugby, his football team Everton or his involvement with the Olympics. Now, he has a new exciting sporting opportunity coming his way, this time with the 2026 Commonwealth Games which will take place in Glasgow. They are scheduled to take place next year, from July to August which will mark the second time Glasgow has hosted the prestigious event. Gethin shared on social media an exciting announcement, that he will be working with Team Wales in an important leadership position during the games. He said: "I am beyond proud to share that I have been appointed 'Chef de Mission' for @team_wales for @glasgow_2026 . Mae’n anrhydedd enfawr. And no.. I won’t be the designated team cook! "Chef de Mission is a French term meaning “Head of Mission”, and in a sporting context is responsible for leading, supporting and representing the national team at a major multi-sport event, such as the Commonwealth Games." Back in 2018, Gethin had travelled to the Gold Coast Games as Team Wales' Attaché, which he described as one of the best experiences of his career. This inspired him to return to university to study High Performance, Governance, Leadership and Culture. He's worked with organisations like the NFL, WRU, the Rugby League World Cup, London 2012 and Rio 2016 which has given him the experience that his led him to this role. Gethin continued: "As Chef de Mission for #TimCymru , I will be the spokesperson for the team, representing and supporting the athletes and sports as we prepare for and compete in Glasgow 2026. "I could not be more excited for what’s ahead. 400 diwrnod i fynd!" Team Wales shared the exciting news on social media. They said: "Introducing our Chef de Mission for Glasgow 2026! "Gethin’s is no stranger to the world of elite sport or to Team Wales. With experience at past Games and a real passion for Welsh sport, he’s ready to support and guide the team on and off the field. Gareth Davies, Chair of Commonwealth Games Wales said: "The Chef de Mission role is integral to shaping the team’s culture and values, both internally among athletes and support staff, and externally to the wider public. "We are really pleased that Gethin wanted to apply for this position, and it’s a testament to his commitment and passion for the role how professional and knowledgeable he is. We look forward to working with him as we go into the final 400 days before the Games begin." The Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
