The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is facing significant challenges in supporting the country's 40-plus sports federations due to its limited budget.
According to GOC President Ben Nunoo-Mensah, the current budget is insufficient to support all federations, forcing the committee to prioritize teams qualifying for the Olympics.
The national U-23 football team, the Black Meteors, is among the teams affected, having not featured at the Olympics since 2004. Nunoo-Mensah explained that the GOC tries to distribute its limited funds fairly among federations that request support.
However, this means that some teams receive limited or no funding, hindering their ability to participate in international competitions.
The GOC's budget constraints are part of a larger issue with sports funding in Ghana. In March, Ghana's Parliament approved a budget allocation of GHS 65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the 2025 fiscal year.
However, this amount has been widely criticized as inadequate to meet the sector's needs.
Despite the budget constraints, the GOC has provided some support to federations and athletes. In 2024, the committee allocated funds to various federations, including,
Team Support Grant, Football ($13,572) and Volleyball ($9,000)
Scholarship for Athletes, Athletics ($12,000), Boxing ($18,000), Judo ($6,000), Swimming ($12,000), and Weightlifting ($12,000)
Continental Athlete Support Grant, Cycling Federation ($10,000) and Swimming Federation ($5,000)
The GOC's budget limitations highlight the need for increased funding to support Ghana's sports sector and ensure that all federations can participate in international competitions.
