Ghana’s Golden Arms shine bright with 55 medals at African Armwrestling Championships

Ghana’s Golden Arms once again demonstrated their dominance at the 14th African Armwrestling Championships in Abuja, Nigeria, delivering a stunning medal haul over just two days of fierce competition.
The Ghanaian team, defending champions from the previous edition, amassed a remarkable total of 55 medals, comprising 26 gold, 20 silver, and nine bronze, finishing third only behind Benin and host nation Nigeria. The event featured over 400 athletes from 20 African countries, showcasing Ghana’s rising dominance in the sport.
Leading the charge for Ghana were standout athletes Grace Mintah, Mabel Yeboah, and Daniel Acquah, each clinching four gold medals apiece. Their outstanding performances underscored the strength and depth of the Ghanaian squad, drawing high praise from the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams.
“This success is not an isolated achievement. It reflects sustained grassroots development, disciplined athlete grooming, and purposeful partnerships between the public and private sectors. Armwrestling has become a true national pride”; he said.
The Abuja championships also served as a vital preparation for the upcoming African Games, where Ghana aims to improve on its impressive 41-medal count from the Accra 2023 edition. Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) President Charles Osei-Asibey expressed immense satisfaction with the team’s resilience and accomplishments.
“We never disappoint 26 gold medals is a fantastic result,” he told Graphic Sports from Abuja. “Considering what the team endured, I’ll boldly say this is Ghana’s best-performing national team. We are truly grateful to everyone who supported us”; Charles Osei-Asibey mentioned.
Looking forward to the 2027 African Games, Mr. Osei-Asibey called on all Ghanaians to continue their support for the armwrestling team. “Our focus now shifts to 2027. We urge the nation to keep backing us. As a federation, we are thrilled by our athletes’ performance thank you, Ghana!” he affirmed, emphasizing the federation’s ambition to build on their current success and maintain their continental supremacy.
With medals flowing and momentum firmly on their side, Ghana’s armwrestling juggernaut is steadily cementing its place as a powerhouse in African sports. Their continuous rise reflects not only individual talent but also the fruits of strategic investment and national pride, promising an exciting future for the Golden Arms on the international stage.
